Background of the Study
Youth engagement is increasingly recognized as a vital force in advancing community-based environmental sustainability (Adeyemi, 2023). In Ibadan South West, young people play a pivotal role in spearheading initiatives such as recycling drives, tree planting, and public awareness campaigns. Their innovative approaches and energy have contributed to grassroots movements aimed at addressing environmental challenges, from waste management to urban greening (Okafor, 2023). Despite their significant contributions, young environmental activists often face obstacles such as limited funding, insufficient institutional support, and regulatory constraints (Chukwu, 2024). This study examines the role of youth in driving sustainable practices, highlighting both the achievements and challenges encountered. It also explores strategies to enhance youth participation in environmental conservation efforts, emphasizing the need for collaborative partnerships between government, private sector, and community organizations (Ibrahim, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the active involvement of youth in environmental sustainability in Ibadan South West, there is a lack of comprehensive understanding of their contributions and the challenges they face (Adeyemi, 2023). Limited institutional support and financial constraints hinder the full potential of youth-led initiatives, resulting in suboptimal environmental outcomes (Chukwu, 2024). This study addresses the gap by evaluating the impact of youth participation on community sustainability and identifying measures to overcome existing challenges (Ibrahim, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
1. To examine the contributions of youth to environmental sustainability.
2. To assess the challenges faced by youth in community-based environmental initiatives.
3. To propose strategies to enhance youth participation in sustainability efforts.
Research Questions:
1. What roles do youth play in promoting environmental sustainability in Ibadan South West?
2. What are the primary challenges encountered by young environmental activists?
3. How can support systems be improved to enhance youth engagement?
Research Hypotheses:
1. Youth involvement significantly improves community-based environmental sustainability.
2. Financial and institutional barriers negatively affect youth participation.
3. Enhanced support mechanisms lead to greater effectiveness of youth initiatives.
Significance of the Study
This study underscores the vital role of youth in driving environmental sustainability in Ibadan South West, offering valuable insights for policymakers and community organizations. The findings aim to enhance youth participation and address challenges, thereby strengthening grassroots environmental efforts (Adeyemi, 2023; Chukwu, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to examining the role of youth in community-based environmental sustainability in Ibadan South West Local Government Area, Oyo State.
Definitions of Terms:
1. Youth Engagement: Active participation of young individuals in community activities.
2. Environmental Sustainability: Practices that maintain ecological balance and resource availability.
3. Grassroots Movements: Community-driven efforts for social or environmental change.
